Eating disorders (EDs) and substance use disorders (SUDs) are highly co-morbid, with the symptoms of each illness often exacerbating and interacting with the other. It is important for SUD clinicians to be able to identify when ED symptoms are present and to understand the nuances of ED behaviors and thinking to intervene. Additionally, individuals with EDs and SUDs benefit when clinicians and loved ones are aligned and have strategies to effectively communicate and support the individual in treatment.
The target audience for this continuing education program is mental health providers and clinicians working with individuals with mental health diagnoses. Materials are appropriate for learners with an introductory level of understanding about mental health concerns.
Educational Objectives:
Following this presentation, participants will be able to…
- Define similarities, differences and comorbid presentations among Eating Disorders and Substance Use Disorders.
- Describe effective ways to approach a conversation about a patient’s eating behaviors.
- Discuss ways to engage and empower support persons through Emotion Focused Family Therapy techniques
